He is seen by many historians as the figure behind some of the greatest national projects of his time, and a loving husband who supported Queen Victoria throughout her reign. But Prince Albert gets too much positive press, historian Lucy Worsley has said. Worsley, chief curator of Historic Royal Palaces, said his ambition was also part of the reason Queen Victoria gave birth to so many children.
Victoria had nine children in quick succession and often suffered symptoms that would today be diagnosed as postnatal depression. By baby number seven, Victoria realised that she had had enough children. Albert is a great man. To be fair, Worsley added, this was the 19th century when a man was expected to be the boss. Partly because he had a lot of the personal qualities that historians themselves admire. He was a thinker, not a feeler. He definitely had a massive IQ.

Iconic in style; immense in ambition. When it opened in , Albert Dock changed the way the docks worked here forever. Its warehouses were fireproof and secure; traders could do deals before their import taxes were due; hydraulic cranes hauled heavy cargoes across the flagstones. The speed with which ships unloaded and turned around was cut in half. Dock engineer and architect Jesse Hartley has a unique vision for the Albert Dock, building vast warehouses on its quaysides to securely store goods arriving from across the globe.
The coming of steamships means that many are simply too big to sail in and out of the Albert Dock. It teems with hundreds of small warships, submarines, landing craft and merchant ships. At no time in its history have so many ships berthed at Albert Dock.

His reforms of the military and navy prepared them well for World War I. Known as “Bertie” within the family, he was subjected to a strict regimen to prepare him for the throne. As was customary for members of British royalty, Prince Edward attended Oxford and Cambridge universities and soon after declared his desire to pursue a career in the military.
